SUBJECT: HAZARDOUS RECALL - Sony Electronics Inc. recalls certain VAIO TZ-series Notebook Computers

DISTRIBUTION: WORLDWIDE

In cooperation with the CPSC, Sony Electronics Inc., of San Diego, California recalls certain VAIO TZ-series Notebook Computers due to a burn hazard. AAFES ONLY SOLD THESE LAPTOPS VIA CATALOG OR INTERNET.

Name of Product: Certain VAIO TZ-series Notebook Computers sold between May 2007 and July 2008

Description: The recalled notebook computer models are the VAIO VGN-TZ100 series, VGN-TZ200 series, VGN-TZ300 series and VGN-TZ2000 series. Not all units are affected; consumers should contact Sony to determine if their unit is included in the recall.

  • VGN-TZ50B,90NS,90S,90HS,50B (Rel May, 2007)
  • VGN-TZ71B,91NS,91S,91HS,71B (Rel Sep/Oct, 2007)
  • VGN-TZ92B,92NS,92S,92HS,72B (Rel Feb, 2008)
  • VGN-TZ73B,93US,93NS,93S,73B (Rel May, 2008)

Overseas models (sold in Japan):

  • VGN-TZ37GN/B, VGN-TZ27GN/B, VGN-TZ17GN/B
  • Hazard: Irregularly positioned wires near the computer’s hinge and/or a dislodged screw inside the hinge can cause a short circuit and overheating. This poses a burn hazard to consumers. In rare cases, it generates heat around the DC jack inlet and frame of LCD screen, which creates the potential of deformation of the plastic casing.

    Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled notebook computers immediately and contact Sony to determine if their notebook is affected. Call 1-(888) 526-6219 anytime, or visit the firm’s website at www.sony.com/support for assistance. The firm will arrange for an inspection and repair, if needed. Sony will contact customers who have registered their computers with them.
